Birds Didn't Rate on Boys' Big Board

POSTED: Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 6:52 AM

We're not anywhere near the first blog to take note of how the Cowboys, always eager to publicize their operation, posted images on the team Web site that contained their draft board on draft  day. Interested people (with much too much time on their hands) quickly found ways to read many of the names listed.

So, in a way, George C. Scott's darkest fear from "Dr. Strangelove" has been realized. They saw the big board!!!Jerry Jones makes a selection

From an Eagles perspective, this is interesting mainly in that Dallas valued at least a few Eagles draftees differently. Brandon Graham, the defensive end the Birds traded up to take 13th overall in the first round, was ranked as the fifth-best player in the second round on the Cowboys' board. Before you get too excited about that, the fact is, teams often vary wildly in their evaluations. Dallas, like the Eagles, has hit big with some picks in recent years and done much less well with others. It's a fact that all three of the DEs most people said were the draft's best went between pick 13 and pick 16. It seems really unlikely that Graham would have lasted until the second round, regardless of Dallas's opinion.

It's less surprising that Dallas ranked Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, the DE the Birds took in the third round, as a fifth-rounder; most people felt he went earlier than he was rated.

Here's a link to a blog that has a fairly complete listing of the names on the board.

And in closing, we'd like to quote Slim Pickens at the end  of the movie: "Yeeehhaaa!!!"

We're trying to get Jerry Jones to be the pinata at my 7 year old's birthday party. Just afraid we can't get anyone to clean up the remains when we're done. He's ****.

I'm guessing most of you don't make a living evaluating talent? I thought the birds had a very good draft. Graham was a bit of surprise, thought they would look for a bigger end. But the rest of the draft played out well. Plus the couple players they bagged prior to the draft with trades was really good. Ernie Sims is going to be a superstar on this team. I just hope they can keep him under contract. Expect well over 100 tackles from this guy.

wow. You mean that the eagles took players that werent ranked highly by other teams? They took players that shocked everyone at the particular spot they were picking? Wow. Thats never happened before. Next your going to tell me that they have specialized in drafting undersized defensive players over the years. Your all forgetting the andy Reid mantra. "I can take any players and plug them into my system and make it work". yep, he's just a little smarter than everyone else it seems. Other teams will just have to be satisfied with those lame Lombardi trophies...

Dallas runs a different defense then the eagles anyway, of course they will value players differently. its a non story... as for Brandon Graham and lining him up at end i still have questions, he's a little light to stuff the run on the run side... we'll see if im right or wrong over time.

the sichee-ation: "Eagles could've dished those first, second and third round picks they essentially gave up to KC and took Eric Berry." Unless you work in the KC front office, I'm pretty sure you're guessing there.

I hate to constantly be Captain Obvious but Dallas' board has players that Dallas thinks would fit in and play well for Dallas. It is a distortion to interpret their board as an opinion on anyone else's draft, including the Eagles. To be on that board at all meant that Dallas had at least mild interest. There were several fairly high ranked players that would not be on Dallas' board at all because Dallas felt they had no use for them in their offensive or defensive systems. This is why they didn't need to have 32 players in each "round".

MJ- I would never direspect your point of view; that said, ESPN rated Eagles draft "c-". They had many holes to fill, and didn't, they even selected players for positions which thay had zero needs?! To me that is the definition of a poor draft strategy. More subjectively, 3-for-1 is a very risk move.

DooDoo...do you think they had a column ranking the top air guitar players on their board that they will need to compete in the NFC East with McBlow?

I feel better already about the Eagles draft. Dallas having 3 PSU players in the first round is dumb? I am a PSU guy and wouldnt draft a player from there before the 4th round. Sean Lee isnt better than Connor or Poz. Bowman neither, and Jared Odrick is no first round talent... Jimmy Kennedy was a much better pro prospect and he didnt do anything. PSU players still have to go to class and overachieve based on their talent levels. They do not translate to the pro game. Dallas onboard, means a blessing in disguise for the Birds.
