Andy Reid: Eagles will be OK
Les Bowen
Andy Reid seemed to want to calm the waters in his day-after news conference, following the Eagles' 16-14 loss at Pittsburgh Sunday.
Reid's message was that the 3-2 Eagles are generally playing well, that they have a couple of fundamental things they need to fix, but they are on the right path.
"We're the second-lowest-scoring team in the National Football League right now" because of turnovers, Reid said. "We've got to make sure we fix that ... We've done well with the interception part of it, we're doing a better job with the protection part of it, and the decision-making part of it, [now] we've got to take care of the football. Then, we've got to be able to get off the field on that last [Steelers] drive."
Reid noted that defensively, even though the Eagles' sack numbers are way down, so are their points allowed. He said teams are playing more conservatively, keeping in extra blockers, running shorter, quicker routes, because of the Birds' pressure.
Reid was asked about some of quarterback Michael Vick's statements following the game. Vick said he knows he has to stop fumbling, but he also repeated his familiar view that turnovers are part of the game, and even said that everything happens for a reason, indicating somehow that God or fate might cause him to give the ball away.
Reid said he was pretty sure Vick was asked about fumbling more than a few times Sunday. He did not seemed worried about the quarterback's mindset: "Nobody is more competitive than this guy. He knows he can't fumble...He's going to get that right."
Reid lauded "the grit of this football team, the toughness."
"We haven't been stopped as much as we've stopped ourselves," he said.

The only reported injuries from Sunday were Mychal Kendricks' ankle and Bryce Brown's shoulder. Both players should practice Wednesday, Andy Reid said.
DREAMER
KarenD- Reid is starting to sound like a Democrat...if we say it enough, maybe people will believe it. LoL...
Professor1982 - Yea, but he's a card carrying Mormon Republican. Regardless of his politics, I'm tired of Reid. I'm tired of all of the same old same old mistakes. The poor play calling, the bad drafting, the poor clock management. I'm tired of losing like they do. Please. Dump Reid and Vick and let's have a fresh start.
D.C. Stinkley - Save your BS for the Politics page.

Reid, Marty, and Castillo just have to do a better job. hockeyray
I'm willing to give Vick a chance to correct the fumble problem. IF he puts his mind to it, I think he can do it. Will it take away from other aspects of his game and take away anny potential he has to be a good QB? We'll see. His career is on the line. eagles100- This comment has been deleted.
hannibal barca - It has nothing to do with the play calling, idiot. It has to do with executing plays and turnovers. Yeah, run the ball more. Don't attack the opponents weakness. Just run the ball more. No Matter what.
MikeP
sure, downplay turnovers.
unreal 1000hugs
I like the team....I have a good relying...the defense is much improved...I'm confident the offense will find its footing.....get hot late. bannedrepublican
blah blah blah blah blah.... pokerplayersunite- This was a bad loss. This team has a tough stretch coming up. They have a desperate Lions team, bye, a very good Falcons team and then a another desperate team in the Saints. Like I said, a tough stretch. If they don't focus and cut down on the turnovers, they could find themselves 3-5 at the halfway point.
Tough one for the Birds. But I also feel like we are poised to do some damage this year. Just gotta stay healthy. It will all fall in place soon. tonyjlive
Ugh, once again Andy and Marty fail with poor schemes and bad play calling. I have zero qualifications to be an NFL coach. However even I can see that running the football more leads to success. Again they keep going for the homerun play when it's not there. They regularly throw the ball on 1st and 2nd downs, leaving 3rd and long which means yet another pass. 30 pass attempts vs. 16 rushes by McCoy. The steelers controlled the ball for 7 more minutes. It's frustrating to watch this team as Reid says "we haven't been stopped as much as we've stopped ourselves". Last week they put the ball in the hands of the best player (McCoy) and said go win the game. This week, same old Marty and Reid. bobf876
Stopping yourselves is usually what sets the good teams apart from the bad teams in the NFL. Most of the NFL teams have talent and on any given weekend.....
The elite teams are the ones that don't shoot themselves in the foot.. They don't fumble on the one yard line, they don't miss coverage during the opponents final drive, they don't waste timeouts, they don't run balls back to their own 11 from deep in the end zone, they don't get stupid penalties, etc. Etc... "The Eagles will be OK" That is Reid's long term view of the team. I agree, they will be OK after he is fired at the end of this year. Until then, same ole, same ole. Kioto
Why are we content with "Ok" and "need to work on fundamentals," same story year after year? Disappointing franchise with loads of fools gold on it. I am not ok with a mediocre team with a mediocre coach. JJReid
according to vick
vick doesnt have to work on not fumbling. (wtf?)
hes never had that problem before. (wtfx2?)
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be
bloodymess
As long as chumps buy tickets the Eagles will remain OK. 2ndNlong
Am I missing here? How can this team be Ok if the QB is a turnover machine? z03mbm
eagles will be OK once Reid and Marty are gone. Tyrone Biggums
It's tough with no O-line, suspect secondary, and a turn over machine who touches the ball on EVERY play. I hate to be this guy, but I really think the birds drop the next three games. 8-8 here we come.... Mike Boryla
ANDY.MARTY and JUAN have to put themselves in better position, that being no where near the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES!!!!!! tudj
One comment and one comment only should stand out to Jeffery Lurie and the fans. In the past 21 games there have been 52 TurnOvers. Enough of the Vick experiment. Enough of staying the course with Andy. END IT RealizticFan
When the leader of your team....the QB.....says the fumbles were "meant to be" we have a serious issue. RealizticFan
Vick may get his turnovers fixed for a few games. But you always will know that they will return. The big turnover game will likely occur in a pressure playoff game. You just cannot ever be confident that they are really gone. This is fools gold. Taser
les,as you know,i said the steelers 20-16 because of BIGBEN (or as some losers call him pigpen),but i thought the eagles could win the game if the QB protected the football,,if Donovan or Kevin made this many mistakes/turnovers and said it was God's will to fumble the ball, BIGRED would have benched them at halftime,i don't know what BIGRED's trying to prove, but you play with the Devil you get Burned..book-it.....wolf. wolf 4
We need Nick, get rid of Vick! Planet of the lacking analytical skills
Andy goofed. This one's on him. etc etc jodya2
O-line stinks....defense cannot stop the run....again, still, no surprise there....safeties stink.....special teams suck.....QB has trouble holding on to the ball......and Andy can be calming as he knows Jeffery does not have the stones to fire him.... nuggett
I think Vick is fumbling on purpose. I think he is using a third party to support his gambling and therefore betting against his own team. I don't expect many to agree with me, but in a few years Vick is done here and may be under contract after Andy gets the boot. Once you get involved in illegal activities, I don't care how much money you make later, you don't change. This story will probably surface in years to come. And you guys used to call McNabb Mr Softee. Richardgozinya
Andy Reid is a bumbling idiot. He and his loser Quarterback Vick must go. Reid should be fired immediately and Vick benched at the same time. The only reason Vick is still playing is because he was friends with Reid's felon son. They both had a good time together as they were both ex-cons. Mr. Laurie while you are getting rid of Reid and Vick please remove those initials from the team helmets. I don't see what good it does to enhance the memory of an overdosed druggie! Skovepipe
ANDY has a glitter in his eye, and that isn't GOLD. tudj
It seems as if the fans are taking Mike Vick at face value with what he said yesterday. Vick was simply saying that he is not perfect and some things just happen. True, if he held the ball better, he wouldn't be a fumble-machine. Stop worrying about his fumbling and worry about Fat Andy not being able to manage the time clock for over 14 years. GO MIKE VICK GO! Panthro2011
Forget all of this bad juju. I can recall the Iggles beating the Lions 55-27 in the playoffs in mid-90's. Big Rodney Peete at QB for that one. The Iggs are primed and ready to do it next week. I hear they are putting a big zipper pouch in vicks uniform so he can stuff the ball in there and not fumble. No worries - a big win for the Iggs next week, looks like 47-11. bigdaddyG
Of the 11 remaining games only 3 are against teams that currently have a winning record. If the Eagles cannot get to the playoffs and win at least one game it will be OK to clean house. That means Vick, some of the much over-rated secondary, and most of the coaching staff. It's not or never, guys! And if Michael Vick doesn't know holding onto the football is pretty basic, he should be benched right away. He's only been playing quarterback all his life! Ron T
Great. Eagles "WILL BE OK."...That must mean Reid and Vick are leaving!!!! sackvicknow
ZZZZZZZ...whatever! NC Eagle Fan
Why am I starting to feel like Vick is McNabb II? TommyMD
Tom Jackson on ESPN said it last night...it is the only stat that Mr. Lurie should need to see that these two men...Reid for choosing Vick and Vick himself should go.
In the last 21 games ...the eagles have turned the ball over 52 TIMES !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vick leads the NFL in FUMBLES. When he's not holding onto the ball to long , or reading a heavy sided blitz we now need to worry about fumbles. PLease go away. We should have let Pittsburgh get him when he got out of jail. Reid had misguided this team to mediocrity and he needs to leave. He and Vick just keep repeating the SAME MISTAKES year in and year out. RealizticFan
OK = 8-8 Mike Boryla
The TEAM is OK. You nail'd it for once, ANDY. Apollo Creed
Here we go again!!! Reid says he will try harder next week and we keep on believing him. Why doesn't he just quit??? He has worn out his welcome in philly. we are tired of all his excuses and well worn tales. HE DOESN'T KNOW FOOTBALL!!! A GOOD HIGH SCHOOL COACH WILL BE BETTER rduexpress
v Professor1982
I think Andy needs to put Vick in a better position to not fumble. Maybe Andy can invent some sort of satchel or sling into which Vick can store the ball when he wants to run? SMitchell
No one is beating the Eagles, but themselves. If we fix our own problems, M-Vick and company will become an unstoppable force. CapitanesAhi
In my opinion give Vick one more start to rectify the situation. Otherwise give Foles the two weeks preparation the bye week brings. It will force Andy Flintstone and Marty Rubble to alter their play calling, allowing McCoy more touches and Foles shorter quicker throws. At least one would hope! This team could easily be 5-1 but just as easily be 0-6. Not good! JDeL
I used to enjoy Andy's press conferences after the team lost. He was arrogant and curt. Lowry told him to straighten up his act and he has tried to do that. Unfortunately, the team is still losing and he will lose his job at the end of this season. BobSG
The team is moving in the right direction. They played a desperate and physical Pittsburgh team to the end, a game that in years past they may have gotten bullied and whipped on the scoreboard. Still, is it too much to ask for the Eagles to actually win a game like this on the road once in a while? If it weren't for the Giants, they would never get a quality road win. dblankj
Beat Detroit and it will be candy and unicorns for everyone. Get back to work everyone. Don't jump past the nets. NYPHILLYPHAN
hey andy - the eagles will most definitely NOT be OK. you're still in charge. jakeAZ
The Eagles will never win under Vick. He just is what he is. He's going to turn the ball over. Whether its an INT or a fumble, he's going to turn it over. I miss Donovan :( Eaglenation5
The forecast for Sunday in Pittsburgh was rain and here is the convo: Andy Reid to Marty: Rain, huh? Well, I think this calls for a 90-10% pass to run ratio in the first half, what do you think?" Marty: "What's 'run' mean? Whatever, as usual, let's fool the defensive coordinator by keeping Vick in the pocket, it always works." These guys suck and we aren't winning anything with this staff. girouxforpresident
ok well lets hope they will be ok and vick can stop with the fumbling but if he stops with the fumbling do we go back to interceptions? i think its one or the other or it seems like it. i dont blame the D for yesterday i blame vick. but hopefully he fixes these problems and the coaches fix their issues and we make this year special... hopefully, i can hope and vick and the rest can shut us up. just doesnt seem like it will happen though. but we can hope. defroe
Someon PLEASE explain why a team of 'professional' football players need to work on the fundamentals. Something is wrong with your players if they can't figure out how to tackle or hold on to the ball. I see pop warner kids with more discipline. Joke. km464471
humorous comments for a 3-2 team. We have one suggesting vick is gambling and throwing games, another democrat analogy (because if we can just relive 2000-2008 wed be in grand shape), and another million excuses for Vick and blame for the coach. Hey, coaches are responsible for players fumbling, who knew. If you just ran when you were supposed to throw, or didnt call a timeout and killed a drive things would be even better right, its just so easy coaching in the nfl all you guys could do it. peteike
I hope the Eagles are happy with their 100 million dollar investment in their human turnover machine. Andy must be because he refuses to put Foles in even for one series just to see what he has got or at least for a change of pace. Andy's job is on the line this year (or so the boss says). You'd think he would want to give Foles a shot. But he will keep Mr. Turnover as his QB unless he gets injured. The Eagles could easily be 0-5 as 3-2. I wonder if Reid ever thinks about that. fanup
This is a top NFL team. The only thing they have to change is the quarterback. He is not able to see the defense he is facing, is confused and has no idea where the blitzs are coming from.Reid, as alwazys is in denial. Jeffrey should admit he made a mistake and eat the rsst of Vick's contract. Also fire the coach whp thought Vick was an elite QB like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Hey Andy, how many games can an NFL team win averaging 14 to 16 points a game? That's how many the Eagles will win.
mario1239
Bull on other team and max protect. The Eagles only line up 4 guys on D line with linebackers deep. They make it easy for other teams line to block because they don't have to worry about the gaps or blitz. Its not always speed or bulk that gets D line to QB, its confusion, and O line not knowing who to block. camasbud
Mike Vick is a train wreck. pumperknickers
This was a tough one to take. As Bubby Brister once said, "could've, should've, would've, didn't". markperantoni
And if Vick doesn't stop his fumbling...then what, Andy?
SteveS11
im the worst basher when it comes to the eagles but we need to look at the schedule they have played...pretty tough don't you think...3 and 2 looks pretty good to me philly19
This is the essence of Andy Reid tenure: get people to accept
mediocrity, i see it with Rubin over there now too, with the
Phillies, but they get a slide, they just won a world title a
few years back, Reid is 8 years removed from a SB disgrace, and
4 years from an NFC debacle also!
This is a guy who still wears his SB ring from GB, like 18 years old??? Nuff said, on that alone!
Don't think he wasn't aware of the agent trying to finagle Lurie
over his son's tragedy too, this Summer? Nothing goes on in his life
that he isn't aware of first and foremost, a CONTROL freak like him,
no way he didn't know the agent wanted and extension and use that
as a catalyst.
Reid is cold and calculated, now that's fine if you are Bill
Bellichic and you have 3 SB rings and 5 trips there, to say nothing
of the ones he took with Parcells???
The guy is in our city who hasn't seen an NFL title since 1960,
and he is trying to suggest that "OK" will cut the mustard, no
Andy that's why you will never win a SB, because just "OK" isn't
OK with SB winning coaches! mikey48
even if the eagles win the super bowl, i think theyl draft a qb first round. vick doesnt have much time left in him and this year there is good talent out there at the position. probably will also pick up an offensive lineman early and a third lb- i think jelani jenkins would be awesome to have. also, id like a solid SS HDemetriou
Ask him why he called a play he's got nothin to say. Wheezing and perspiring time for Andy's firing....better job Phillyphan52
"Andy Reid: Eagles will be OK"
Sorry Andy, as your boss pointed out last year, "OK" is enough to get you fired.
The Eagles need to get to "Really Good", not just okay. fmMD
I am not concerned about the Eagles Offense or Defense. I'M CONCERNED THAT MICHAEL VICK IS STILL THE STARTING QB. Especially since we have an etremely talented and mature Rookie QB rotting away on the bench. However, the thought of going 8-8 and seeing Lurie get rid of Reid will benefit us greatly next season when we win a Super Bowl with basically the same roster minus Vick. garcia7- And, hopefully, a coach like Jon Gruden. I'd even take Steve Mariucchi, Eric Mangini, Herman Edwards, or Dennis Green. ANYONE BUT REID FOR CHRIS' SAKE!! essell
Vick needs to know teams will Blitz him all the time--So he needs to call more audibles and Marty needs to change the wide recievers & tighend routes when there is a blitz coming or the recievers need to come back to the ball when vick is in trouble -The word is out on Vick-So he as to do better with the blitz and cover the ball up when he runs--and last but not least Fire the Special Team Coach. phillyboymike7
I think we all know where Vick will take us, but is this the kind of offensive line you want a rookie breaking in behind? dasher
A win next week and they are 4-2 with a week off. Cant ask for more than that. Sometimes the process is ugly other times it is pretty. Take a look around the league, Saints and Green Bay dont look like world beaters. I like the birds chances if they truly take it as a week to week proposition. 1st and goal
Detroit coming off a bye and needing a win badly. Not a good spot again for the Eagles. Detroit is not the downtrodden team of a few years back, they have some talent. watsonmr
I told my Philly buddies that Vick wouldn't let us down......Go Steelers. yarnallpi
Fat Andy is a loser who needs to get out of our city shawnmac
Calm down people. The fumbling is disturbing, but overall I agree with Reid. They lost an extremely close game to a tough opponent in an away game. If you look their 3 toughest opponents - the Ravens, the Giants and the Steelers, the Eagles competed pretty well against all three. The Eagles look like a playoff team, despite their flaws. If they can improve the giveaway/takeaway ratio, they can be a legit SB contender. A lot of that has to do with Vick. I think he can do it. p-diddy
When you're making all these rationalizations, Walrus, ask not for whom the bell tolls: 6 more L's and you're outtahere! As for Vick, there can be no Kisses for Butterfingers, only Snickers. I don't see the Milky Way in sight with the pair of you directing us. jiminy cricket
Everyone's tired of Reid except some of us old timers who remember before and after Vermeil and through some brief hope with Buddy Ryan.
For a long time we were somewhere between a Cleveland and the present day Jets.Every year we were going to be better but we never were. There are two reasons for this [1]Jeff Lurie is not a knee jerk quick fix owner and [2] Andy Reid.Maybe he will go but nobody can say that he wasn't a class act, especially the players. Ernie Garman
Had a great Sunday. Took my grandkids to the Franklin Institute. Heard the score once all day. Didn't see any of the game until 10 pm. Great day. I've been a fan since 1962 but I just can't watch them play any more. The excuses for Vick's inability take care of the ball; Andy Reid's refusal to wh ... ah what the hell. It doesn't matter. bigcityballer
We will beat Detroit this week. "Lil" Vick will lead us to a glorious victory. Then all is well. This team is and has been sinking into a mire of mediocrity. However we fill the stands, buy eagles gear, etc. Mgmt.,their gold standard isn't the team it's the bottom line, and their happy as pigs in slop. olddog
3-2 and tied on top of the NFC east and people want to clear house and start a rookie. There is a reason fans are not GMs.........The Eagles will probably go 10-6 and make playoffs, from there it is anyone's guess. Or we can start Foles and go 6-10......... nm1891- We're fine there. TVGuy22
You know for all the fumbles and complaints about reid we are still tied for first. Ik we can't keep turning the ball over like this and win and if this season turns out to be a bust the Eagles need to move on from Vick and probably Reid too but lets just let the season play out before we give up after one loss to a pretty good team. essru
Some say I dont' blame the defense for the loss, I blame Vick...well Vick is the one who put the points on the board. Heck, if you were totally honest with yourselves, you would know that both sides of the ball, offense and defense are to blame. stop trying to pin all things bad with the team on Vick. Vick is just a lightening rod for criticism due to his past. yes, he is fumbling to much, but why? have you ever looked at the reasons why? I bet you haven't because most of you are to blinded by your dislike for Vick that you won't even judge him fairly. The defense, while improved, still can't produce turnovers, which would give the offense more times to be on the field to produce points. The defense is bend but don't break, which means they bend so much that the other team keeps the ball for 5, 6, 7 minutes. they need to get more stops on 3rd down to give their offense more chances with the ball, that is why they are not scoring as much because they don't have the ball enough. both sides are to blame not just Vick alone. will50
