Analysts expect Reid to return

POSTED: Monday, December 5, 2011, 8:47 AM

The Eagles did not play Sunday, but that does mean they were not talked about throughout the broadcasts on the various NFL shows from the NFL Network show at 9 a.m. to Sunday Night Football late into the evening. The topic was an obvious one, and one that will not go away over the final four weeks of the season: What about Andy Reid's future? The NFL Network delved into this more than the other shows that we caught.

* Michael Irvin on the NFL Network: “If anybody in the National Football League has earned an opportunity to see this thing through, certainly Andy Reid has. Bar none, period. I say you sign DeSean Jackson, you bring this thing back together and you say give us an offseason, and let us get back at it next year.”

* Michael Lombardi on the NFL Network: "Andy Reid has to change the team in terms of getting some toughness. He has to change the culture in the locker room. It has to become a locker room that focuses more about being a good team as opposed to what’s next on the payroll or what I get rewarded for in terms of my game check. This team lacks a true toughness in the sense that when they get the ball inside the red zone, they can’t really pound it in; it has to be deceptions and decoys. The smart play here is to bring Andy Reid back for another year, but also I think they’re going to have to rearrange the chairs of their coaching staff defensively. I don’t think they can go through another season the way they went through this year. Ultimately, get tougher and fix the defense."

* Jason LaCanfora on the NFL Network: "Andy Reid, I don’t believe he’ll be fired at this point based on what I’ve heard, but there could be friction about the composition of the staff, defensive coordinator, does [Juan] Castillo stay or go? So maybe that gets things going in another direction, but I think he’ll be back."

* Fox analyst Howie Long when asked if Reid will be the head coach of the Eagles next year: “Yes. I think there might be some staff changes and could be some personnel changes. What do they do with DeSean Jackson?”

* As he reported on Pro Football Talk earlier in the day, NBC's Mike Florio offered this on Sunday Night Football: “Michael Vick will be back and he will want Andy Reid to be back. I am told Andy Reid will keep his job if he will admit that hiring Juan Castillo to be the defensive coordinator was a mistake, and move on from Castillo. If he doesn’t, Reid will be fired.”

It doesn't matter what these analyst and writers think. Nor does it matter who else is out there to takeover. What matters is what the fans think. And most of us want Andy gone. We are sick of putting our hard earned money into a team run by someone who can't move this team to the next level.

Don't your editors at DN know that the fans here booed Michael Irvin when he got hurt at the Vet? So do you really think Eagles fans want to hear his opinion on keeping Andy Reid? Michael Irvin wants to keep a cancer in our locker room and bring back Andy so the Cowboys will have an easier time winning the division next year. We all but handed it to them this season and they don't want to take it. Der, lets ice our own kicker and lose in OT. Yeah I care what that Cowboy thinks..not.

Fisher didn't exactly do better than AR...playoffs yes, Superbowl appearance yes...More of the same probably, accept Andy has a better winning percentage and record. By the way, defense is he way you win championships and we have not had a good defense since Jim passed and that's what we need.

Oh, Michael Irvin said Andy Reid should stay... well then I guess it's settled, because he is so intelligent. The only advice Michael Irvin should be doling out is where to find the best crack cocaine and prostitutes.

The thing most of you are missing is.... Reid runs the offense. It's not so much Marty, but it's Andy that comes up with the game plan and Marty calls the plays Andy wants him to call. Why do you think the previous OC's that worked for Andy got other jobs and are run oriented? They learn under Reid how not to game plan. Bill Walsh, the inventor of the west coast offense ran the ball more than Andy does... Ricky Watters, Roger Craig and Tom Rathman (I think that was his name). Why does Andy think he's smarter than the guy who invented the offense?

Whether it is the right thing or not..how can they sell the city on keeping Andy Reid after the disaster that this season is??? Doing so would be saying that you are going for nothing less than a super bowl run with basically the team you put together this year...The pressure that would be on the team and Reid, would mean that anything short of a hot start would set up for what happened this year only magnified...and as early as late September...All these aquistions are just an admission of poor drafting...

The people who are saying that Reid didn't have anything to do with the Eagles' resurgence in the 2000s are revisionists. Reid brought stability to the team and a real offensive philosophy, things the Eagles hadn't had in ages.

I just dont see how we could beat the Packers last year or this year. Nelson, Driver, Finely,Jennings are CLUTCH. Make plays etc. Even the Giants have better receivers than we do! They dont just catch the ball in the 1st have but even in the 4th quarter when it counts!!!! Maclin should be our 3rd receiver he's not clutch. Tell Mr Jackson to stick with punt returns. We need two more receivers 6'2 220 - That get physical etc. Thats why reid needs to go because he keeps dragging along all this dead weight. Players that just are not CLUTCH and that dont get physical when it counts. The packers are the template and we're no where close!!!!

Reid will be back because the Accountants pride themselves on no dead cap money. Reid has two years left on his deal. Lurie would rather give a mid-season interview than eat the $10M he owes Reid. I hope I'm wrong.

Some thoughts on the comments offered by each of the experts:

Michael Ervin: He's the only one of the five guys mentioned that provides any substantive support for staying with AR (says he has "earned it"); he also more or less marries Reid with DeSean, which is interesting because there's really no way the Eagles can bring DeSean back (which is fodder for a different discussion).

Michael Lombardi: His entire analysis supports a decision to fire Reid, but then he says the Eagles should bring him back.

Jason LaCanfora: Says only that Reid will be back, based on what he's heard.

Howie Long: Predicts Andy will return, but does not support with any reasoning.

Mike Florio: Reports that a source has told him that Andy will be back as long as he gets rid of Castillo.

So there's really not much here, which is not all that surprising when you consider that these guys have no incentive to stick their necks out...

Hmmmm... lets see... Brad Childress is out there... Spags may be available... Possibly even Fisher. Hell, I think I'd take Mangenius at this point. I don't want Cowher. He took 13 years to win a SB himself. There are quite a few coaches out there... maybe even some college coaches to come up the ranks. I'm all for coach tryouts for a few years.
