Paul Domowitch's Eagles' Report Card

RUSHING OFFENSE Sitting on a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the one and only thing the Eagles couldn't afford was turn the ball over, and that's exactly what Ryan Mathews did. The Eagles averaged a season-high 5.5 yards per carry and had six runs of 10 yards or more. But the fumble canceled most of that out.

RUSHING OFFENSE

Sitting on a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the one and only thing the Eagles couldn't afford was turn the ball over, and that's exactly what Ryan Mathews did. The Eagles averaged a season-high 5.5 yards per carry and had six runs of 10 yards or more. But the fumble canceled most of that out.

GRADE: C

PASS OFFENSE

Carson Wentz was going to throw an interception eventually. Unfortunately, it came on an ill-advised boom-or-bust deep ball that cost the Eagles a chance at a comeback win. Other than that, he played very well, completing 75.7 percent of his passes and notching his third 100-plus passer rating in four starts.

GRADE: B

RUN DEFENSE

The Lions, who came into the game ranked 22nd in the league in rushing, ran for 57 yards in the first quarter and 77 in the first half as they built a 21-7 lead. The Eagles shut off the tap in the second half, though, holding the Lions to three yards on 10 carries.

GRADE: B

PASS DEFENSE

The Eagles, who were the only team in the league that hadn't allowed a TD pass, gave up three to Matthew Stafford in the first half, including two to running back Theo Riddick. The second half was a different story as the Eagles sacked Stafford four times and held him to 58 passing yards and one passing first down.

GRADE: B-minus

SPECIAL TEAMS

Caleb Sturgis booted three field goals, including a 50-yarder at the end of the first half and a 49-yarder in the fourth quarter that gave the Eagles the lead. Three of his five kickoffs went for touchbacks. On the other two, the returner never made it past the 18-yard line.

GRADE: A-minus

OVERALL

We can talk about the impressive way the defense bounced back in the second half. We can talk about Carson Wentz's 102.8 passer rating and the fact that six different Eagles receivers caught at least three passes. Bottom line, though, is, if Ryan Mathews does a better job of protecting the football on third-and-2, the Eagles would be 4-0 right now rather than 3-1.
