The Eagles officially released offensive lineman Todd Herremans on Friday, one day after news initially broke that the team was moving on from one of its longest-tenured players.

Herremans, 32, played 10 seasons with the Eagles after the team drafted him in 2005. He met with coach Chip Kelly on Friday about the decision.

"Todd has been the ultimate professional during my two years in Philadelphia with him," Kelly said in a statement. "He is a tough player and I wish him all of the best as he moves forward in his NFL career."

The move opens $2.8 million in cap space, bringing the Eagles around $27 million below the salary cap entering free agency on March 10. The Eagles also must find a new starter at right guard, where Herremans started eight games last season.

By releasing Herremans at this point, Herremans is able to sign with a team even before free agency begins.
