Eagles Notes: Maclin makes first appearance for Birds since 2012

CHICAGO - Jeremy Maclin started for the Eagles on Friday, marking the veteran wide receiver's first game since Dec. 30, 2012.

Maclin, who missed practice time this week with leg soreness, did not play in 2013 because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He finished with one catch for 15 yards, hauling in the only pass on which he was targeted.

Fellow wide receiver Riley Cooper did not play beacuse of a foot injury that has sidelined him for most of training camp. Ifeanyi Momah started in his place. The 24-year-old, who was cut late in last season's training camp, caught the first pass of the game and was targeted three times in the first quarter.

Nose tackle Bennie Logan was the only other starter to miss the game. Logan, dealing with a hamstring injury, was replaced by Damion Square.

The other players who were absent were cornerback Nolan Carroll (hamstring/groin), linebacker Jake Knott (hamstring), wide receiver Jeff Maehl (foot), running back Chris Polk (hamstring), and center Julian Vandervelde.

With Carroll sidelined, rookie Josh Huff was the Eagles' top kick returner. He opened the game with a 21-yard return, although the return started eight yards deep in the end zone, and in the second quarter took one back for a 102-yard TD.

With Chris Polk out w, Matthew Tucker moved up the depth chart. Tucker rushed for two touchdowns before fumbling in the third quarter. He left the game because of a hamstring injury.

Nate Allen is trying to hold off Earl Wolff in the competition for the second starting-safety spot, next to Malcolm Jenkins, and the Eagles gave Allen an extended look. He opened with the starters and remained in the game even when the second-team defense entered.

Allen took advantage of the extra work. He hauled in an interception with the help of Brandon Graham's pass rush.

Linebacker Casey Matthews suffered a lower-back injury and needed to be helped off the field in the third quarter. . . . Quarterback Matt Barkley entered in the second half and helped the Eagles to a 94-yard drive, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass to rookie running back David Fluellen. Barkley threw an interception later in the quarter. . . . Square made his presence felt on special teams with a blocked field goal in the first quarter. . . . Alex Henery kicked all three of his first-half kickoffs into the end zone, with one a touchback. . . . Defensive end Vinny Curry recorded a first-half sack.
