Tannehill named as Dolphins starter

Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, once rumored as a possible Eagles pick, has won the Miami Dolphins' starting job, getting a chance he never would have had with the Birds.

Tannehill, who played at Texas A&M, was the eighth overall pick, beating out Matt Moore, who finished last year as Miami's starter.

Since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season, the Dolphins have had more starting quarterbacks than any other team. Tannehill will become the 17th, and amazingly, he'll be the first rookie to start an opener at QB for Miami. Neither Marino nor Bob Griese can make that claim.

Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans have confirmed a report by the Tennessean that second-year QB Jake Locker, the team's first-round pick in 2011, will be their starter this season, beating out Matt Hasselbeck for the starting job.

It's been a rough start with his new team for Denver quarterback Peyton Manning. In seven drives with him at the reins, the Broncos have scored just one touchdown. But it's not really Manning's doing - his offense has coughed up the ball four times, while he's completed 67 percent of his passes. Oh well, at least Denver fans get to see a future Hall of Famer in the twilight of his career and they don't have to hear John Elway complain about Tim Tebow anymore. (Our bet for Elway ragging on Manning is Week 8.)

A person familiar with the situation says the Jags are going to play multiple home games in London, starting in 2013. The source says the deal to visit the land of the original football - that's soccer, y'all - will be announced Tuesday in Jacksonville. (Piccadilly was booked?)

New Jags owner Shad Khan wants to play games overseas to increase the team's global brand.

Yeah, this will work. Everybody remembers those London Monarchs of NFL Europe fame. No?

The Buffalo Bills cut defensive end Shawne Merriman, in a move that surprised the 28-year-old one-time star pass-rusher, since he tweeted Sunday he was preparing for practice. . . . Kansas City linebacker Tamba Hali will miss the Chiefs' Sept. 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons without pay after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the league said, without disclosing the nature of the violation . . . The Falcons lost offensive tackle Will Svitek to a season-ending right arm injury.
