Eagle View: The good, the bad and the ugly

Here is a look at the good, the bad and the ugly from Sunday's Eagles-Jaguars game: After not dressing for the first two games of the season, Darryl Tapp made up for lost time with a sack on the Jaguars' first drive. The Eagles' defensive end came off the right edge and dropped quarterback David Garrard for a 9-yard loss. Earlier, Tapp played tackle in the nickel package.

Here is a look at the good, the bad and the ugly from Sunday's Eagles-Jaguars game:

GOOD

After not dressing for the first two games of the season, Darryl Tapp made up for lost time with a sack on the Jaguars' first drive. The Eagles' defensive end came off the right edge and dropped quarterback David Garrard for a 9-yard loss. Earlier, Tapp played tackle in the nickel package.

Dimitri Patterson, one-on-one with a blocker and Jags return man Mike Thomas, contained Thomas until Patterson's teammates arrived. The Jaguars were limited to an 11-yard return on Sav Rocca's 56-yard punt. In the third quarter, Patterson again beat everyone downfield to blast Mike Sims-Walker, stopping him for no gain after a 45-yard punt by Rocca.

Juqua Parker picked up his fourth sack of the season and continues to make an impact with limited playing time. Trent Cole added two sacks, and the Birds ended with six total on the day.

It was another solid performance by Rocca. He punted seven times for a 45.1-yard average. His longest was 56 yards.

Ellis Hobbs returned his one kickoff for 46 yards.

That's two weeks in a row that DeSean Jackson has made defenders look silly as they try to chase him down from behind. He's the fastest kid on the playground.

BAD

Can it get any worse for Nick Cole? The guard was dusted again on an inside rush during the Eagles' second drive when Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton pummeled Michael Vick for a sack. Cole was bailed out, however, when Vick then tossed a beauty of a touch pass to DeSean Jackson that the receiver took 61 yards for the Eagles' first score.

Reggie Wells, who replaced Cole in the first half, picked up an early holding penalty to negate a 9-yard Mike Vick scramble.

The Eagles committed seven penalties for 84 yards. The Jags committed four for 67. Are the Eagles too talented to be disciplined?

Jags tight end Marcedes Lewis had three catches for 15 yards. Last week, he had five catches for 70 yards. That's a big drop-off.

UGLY

It was the same short-yardage struggles for the Birds. On third and 1 in the second quarter, Mike Bell was stuffed on the right side of the line trying to run behind Reggie Wells. On fourth down, Bell ran left behind Owen Schmitt and Jason Peters and came up short again.

You have to give the Eagles credit for the win, but Jacksonville is one sorry- looking team, especially on offense. Garrard looked about as comfortable in the pocket as Andy Reid would look wearing a dress. The Eagles may have a QB controversy, but at least they have two who can play.
