The skinny: When Baltimore drafted Joe Flacco with the No. 18 pick in the NFL draft and Pittsburgh took Rashard Mendenhall at No. 23, neither team anticipated its rookie would start when the teams met in late September. But they will.

Flacco, the former Delaware quarterback, will make his Monday night debut against an unpredictable and physical Steelers defense, a unit whose starters have allowed just two touchdowns in its first three games.

Mendenhall, the former Illinois star, will start in place of Willie Parker, who suffered a sprained left knee last week against the Eagles.

Flacco, trying to become the first rookie quarterback since Cincinnati's Greg Cook in 1969 to start and win his team's first three games, thought he would have played at Heinz Field by now. He originally went to Pitt but figured early on that he would be stuck on the bench and transferred to Delaware.
