Mornhinweg-Washburn spat not about play-calling

POSTED: Monday, November 28, 2011, 6:01 PM

Should the Eagles give LeSean McCoy a new contract?
Yes. He is a star player who puts the team ahead of his own goals.
No. He is having a nice season but has yet to prove he can excel year in and year out.

The Marty Mornhinweg-Jim Washburn confrontation that resulted in the two Eagles coaches having to be separated by team personnel was not about offensive play-calling, as previously speculated, team sources said.

The spat occurred in the first half when Mornhinweg bumped into Washburn and the defensive line coach took exception and pushed the offensive coordinator back. Mornhinweg didn't back down and the two exchanged words and eventually had to be separated, one Eagles source said.

Some have speculated that Washburn, the Eagles' fiery defensive line coach, was unhappy with Mornhinweg's pass-heavy play-calling in the first half, one that did little to rest the defense.

The incident was just the latest for a 4-7 Eagles team that appears to be coming apart at the seams. They have little time to wallow in their misery, however. A short work week awaits and a cross-country flight to Seattle for a Thursday night game at the Seahawks.

The tiff between the coaches was an oft-broached subject at the NovaCare Complex following a Monday walkthrough.

"That’s a tough situation because that should never happen," Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said. "Coaches or players, we’re in this thing together. I guess things happen playing a sport like this, everything’s always a team, team first. You might have disagreements, guys might feel a certain type of way, but you work it out."

Coach quarrels happen all the time, but rarely do they occur in public view during a game.

"Sensationalism. It's just something that can get blown out of proportion easily," Eagles guard Evan Mathis said. "Things like that happen in this sport. We all get wowed up and fired up. It's nothing personal."

Let me guess, Andy Reid told Eskin that it wasn't about play calling because he knew the wolfman would buy it hook line and sinker and put it out there as fact.

Maybe Washburn spouted off something about the play-calling, and Marty retorted with a quip about blowing FIVE fourth quarter leads.

Sure, Washburnn wanted his guys back on the field as soon as possible so go 3 and out, pass on every down and eat up no clock. Defense should be on the field for most of the game anyway!!!!! What a crock!! Buddy Ryan would have smashed Marty in the head!!

Just punch him in the face!hahahahahah I'm an avid Eagle fan and I don't wish bad on him or anyone but this had to happen in order for them to dump Reid. He has run his course, happens to any coach after an extended run w/ no titles. Ask Reeves or even Shanahan who DID win. I'm ok w/ Fisher too.

It was all about the food Andy ordered for the flight. Wash was furious about all mased potatoes all the time, while Marty was all in with Andy. Wash thought it was OFFENSIVE.

keep washburn and mudd, fire reid marty and andy. and jeff fisher has yet to win a super bowl as well, just to remind everyone. he is almost exactly like reid, many good seasons and playoff appearances with nothing to show for it. i would take him as d coordinator though. the defense was in the top of the league the 2 years he was here

Does anyone still believe the blah blah, blah that comes out of this organization? Washburn wanted to see if Marty's headset was tuned to Pirate Radio instead of the game. Does anyone remember Marty's track record as coach of the Lions? He and Reid must go, oh take Castillo with you.

People please don't wish for Fisher, Gruden, Cowher, or any other has been analyst living the comfy life. We need a hungry young guy looking to make his name, and looking to build a smash mouth defense and balanced offense. And a Brady, Manning, Brees, or even Rothelsburger would be ok, too.

Marty needs to go. If he is calling the plays, he is doing a terrible job. If he isnt calling the plays, he is useless. So, like i said, Marty needs to go.
He is just Andy's friend. He isnt doing anything. If he was any good, he would be getting head coaching chances. His name has not come up in 9 years. How much respect does he get around the league.
He isnt established enough to bully around the sidelines.
He must must go. Along with his buddy Andy. That is a good pacage deal....

Watching the playcalling etc., it seems pretty clear that Reid's coaching hire mistakes have not been limited to the defensive coordinator position.

Mornigwig's misuse of McCoy and play selection has been every bit as bad as Castillo's follies on the defensive side of the ball.

It's probably even more obvious and frustrating to a guy like Washburn to watch than for us, but no coach should ever display his displeasure with another coaches decision in front of the team, ...doing so makes him part of the problem and was a poor decision.

Looking down the road, his odd scheme likely leaves him out of a job when the Eagles hire a new coordinator anyway (and of course the Eagles with personnel adjustments to make to the line to play a traditional scheme)

So we've more or less seen the end of Mornigwig and Washburn here.

But, the more troubling aspect of it all is that not only has Reid lost the team, he's also apparently losing some of the coaching staff as well.

At this point, I don't believe anything the Eagles say. "It wasn't about playcalling." "We passed because the Patriots are stout against the run." Maybe the Eagles wouldn't be so dysfunctional if they were honest with themselves -- and the public -- and then dealt with their problems.

Andy Reid is a psycopath. In his mind, by self-depreciating himself repeatedly by saying that he's disappointed with himself first and foremost, that he's got to do a better job, etcetera, is a way that he thinks will make others think he's a quality coach because he accepts all the blame and "mans up" to the failure of his efforts. In his misconception of reality, he feels that by doing this, others will think "more" of him for accepting the blame rather than him finger pointing at others. Simply put, (in his mind) he's got what it takes because he's honest, doesn't run from blame and is willing to take it on the chin, alone, rather than spread the blame around...which is what should be done. Reid will "protect" his players and accept all the blame because that's what a man, a tough guy does. And a man who does this can't be bad, right??? It's a defense mechanism used by psychotics to fasley bolster their self-worth in the face of accusers. Add this to his distrust of the media in general and you get a robot answering your questions. And as for DeSean Jackson?....dude looks like a lady. So does Howard Eskin.

Its a moot point. Washburn is going to be fired at the end of the season, along with Castillo. That will be the condition that Reid is given if he wants to keep his job for at least another year.
