Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie sighted at Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. - Last year, it was news when Jeffrey Lurie accompanied staffers on a trip to West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith's pro day. The Eagles didn't end up drafting Smith, of course, but Lurie did make his first visit to the Mountain State.

Yesterday, Lurie further expanded his horizons with his first visit to Mobile and Senior Bowl practice. Though high winds ripped loose a sail-like NFL Network sun shield, nearly sending it careening into Mike Mayock and company while they were on the air, the weather in Mobile was decidedly better than in Philadelphia.

"Just wanted to get away from the snowstorm," Lurie joked. Later he explained that he and wife Tina Lai were headed to a business meeting in Florida and decided to stop by Mobile, watch practice and take the scouts and coaches to dinner.

Following the South practice, Lurie held an extensive conversation on the field with Frank Scelfo, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach (the Jags' staff is coaching the South.) Scelfo was Nick Foles' mentor at Arizona. One didn't wish to eavesdrop (well, actually, one kinda did; they were in a very public setting), but the topic was what a wonderful young quarterback and fellow Foles is. On this subject, Lurie has been much less circumspect than Chip Kelly.

Oklahoma corner Aaron Colvin, considered a strong NFL prospect, suffered a torn right ACL in yesterday's South practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Colvin was said to have gotten his feet tangled up with Florida wideout Solomon Patton . . . Eagles staffers seemed to be measuring the diameter of prospects' wrists and knees following the South practice. More "sports science," one would assume . . . Former Eagles defensive backs coach Mike Zordich came here, as out-of-work coaches often do, looking for a lead on a job. Zordich said he held extensive talks recently with new Penn State coach James Franklin about a position at Zordich's alma mater, but Franklin ultimately opted to go in a different direction . . . Greg Lewis, the last Eagle to score a Super Bowl touchdown, is in Mobile checking out the scene, Lewis said yesterday. He is coaching receivers at San Jose State, where former Eagles teammate Hank Fraley coaches the offensive line . . . The North quarterbacks seemed to struggle yesterday, possibly because of high winds, and possibly because they aren't a real impressive group.
