Three Owls to participate in NFL combine

Temple will have three representatives at the NFL combine. Linebacker Tyler Matakevich, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, and cornerback Tavon Young will represent the Owls at the combine, which will be held Feb. 23-29 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

All three players also participated in last month's Senior Bowl.

The 6-foot-1, 232-pound Matakevich is Temple's all-time leader in tackles with 493. He won the Chuck Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski trophies as the nation's best defensive player. Matakevich is among 39 linebackers invited.

Ioannidis (6-4, 292) was a first-team all-American Athletic Conference selection. He is one of 62 linemen invited to the combine.

Young (5-10, 180) battled some late-season injuries, but he ended second on the team with seven pass break-ups. There will be 59 defensive backs at the combine

In all, 332 players were invited.

Penn State received five invitations - quarterback Christian Hackenberg, defensive tackles Austin Johnson of St. Augustine and Anthony Zettel, strong safety Jordan Lucas, and defensive end Carl Nassib of Malvern Prep.

Rutgers had two players, wide receiver Leonte Carroo and linebacker Steve Longa.

Among others with local ties are Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller of Roman Catholic, Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman (Penn Wood), and Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple (South Jersey's Eastern).
