Hampered by three double bogeys Tuesday in his second round, Temple's Brandon Matthews fell short in his bid to advance to match play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Newton, Kan.
Matthews, who reached the quarterfinals of last year's U.S. Amateur, fired a 5-over-par 76 on the Sand Creek Station Golf Course to finish the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying at 7-over 149. A score of 5 over or better was needed to claim one of the 64 spots in match play.
Jason Loehrs of Drexel Hill fired his second 83 to total 166 for the two rounds.
Women's Match Play
Defending champion Emily Gimpel of Whitemarsh Valley and seven-time champion Meghan Stasi of Tavistock comfortably won their first-round matches in the Philadelphia Women's Match Play Championship on Wilmington Country Club's South course.
Gimpel, the top seed, bested Colette Dugan of West Chester, 5 and 3. Second seed Stasi ousted Bonnie George of Huntingdon Valley, 5 and 4.
No. 3 seed Kelsey Solan of Burlington defeated No. 14 Megan Grosky McGowan of Blue Bell, 6 and 5, and No. 4 Liz Haines of Merion advanced with a 2-and-1 win over No. 13 Angie Coleman of Deerfield.
Lower seeds advanced in two matches. No. 9 Pam Brown of Wilmington posted a 1-up win over No. 8 Catherine Elliott of Merion, and 10th seed Alexandra Frazier of Gulph Mills knocked off Victoria Abens of DuPont, the seventh seed, 2 and 1.
New Jersey Open
Severe weather wreaked havoc with the opening round of the 54-hole New Jersey State Open at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, N.J.
Only the morning half of the 126 contestants completed their rounds because of two lightning stoppages in the competition. The second came at 5:13 p.m., and play was halted for the day at 5:40. Players will return to the course at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Brett Jones of Mountain Ridge Country Club, the 2009 Open champion, held the lead among those who finished with a 5-under-par 66. Amateur Tom Gramigna of Tavistock shot the best score, a 74, among Philadelphia-area players who finished.
