The newly formed American Athletic Conference, in which Temple plays, hoped to send its football champion to the Liberty Bowl starting in 2014. But, according to ESPN, the bowl game is striking a deal that will leave the conference out.

The Southeastern Conference and Big 12 Conference are reportedly nearing a deal that would affiliate them with the Memphis, Tenn., bowl game. It is one of six postseason games currently aligned with the American.

To be played on New Year's Eve, this year's game is the last of a three-year agreement that pits the first-place team from Conference USA and the eighth-place team from the SEC. The fifth-place team from the American is the alternate.
