TEMPLE JUNIOR running back Bernard Pierce, as anticipated, has submitted his paperwork with the NFL to apply for early entry into the draft, according to sources close to the situation.

The 6-foot, 220-pound junior from the Glen Mills Schools has rushed for 1,381 yards this season (tied for 11th in FBS) and scored 22 touchdowns (tied for fifth), despite missing a game with a head injury. He played in two others with a tender hamstring.

In a list that was last updated on Oct. 21, waltercamp.com projected Pierce as the 10th-best prospect at his position and a third- or fourth-round pick.

The question then obviously becomes could he improve his status by playing another season in college? But Pierce has had injury issues throughout his career, and sources have indicated he probably doesn't want to take the risk of getting hurt again.

Pierce is taking the same step as Southern Cal quarterback Matt Barkley. It's due diligence. This is a standard evaluation request that most draft-eligible underclassmen file, to begin the process of finding out where they stand. So it's about getting feedback. The NFL doesn't make a final determination on underclassmen until early January. Pierce could always pull his name out at that point if he doesn't like what he's hearing. But sources seem to feel he will most likely leave for the pros.

Pierce ran for a season-high 189 yards in the last game, a 34-16 win over Kent State in which he scored three times. The Owls (8-4, 6-2 MAC East) are expected to get a bowl bid for the second time in three seasons.

Last year, Temple defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson left early and was taken 30th by the New York Jets. The last Owl running back to get drafted was Todd McNair, in 1988 at No. 220 by Kansas City.

Addazio update

Temple football coach Steve Addazio will not interview at Illinois for its opening to replace Ron Zook.

Owls athletic director Bill Bradshaw has confirmed that Illinois did express interest in talking to Addazio, who just completed his first season.

Before granting permission, Bradshaw went to Addazio, who indicated to him that "he was very happy to be at Temple, and not interested in that opportunity."

So much for that rumor.
