Women's College Basketball: Owls' Cardoza coach of year

Temple's Tonya Cardoza has been named the Atlantic Ten coach of the year. The third-year coach has guided Temple to a 22-7 overall record and the second seed in this week's women's A-10 tournament with a 13-1 league mark.

Three Owls earned A-10 honors on Wednesday. Shey Peddy made the first and all-defensive teams. Kristen McCarthy was named to the second team, and Qwedia Wallace made the third team.

Also, Ashley Prim of St. Joseph's was named the A-10's sixth player of the year and La Salle's Ashley Gale the league's most improved player. Gale also earned second- and all-defensive-team honors. St. Joseph's Michelle Baker made the all-defensive team. La Salle's Jess Koci and St. Joseph's Erin Shields made the all-rookie team.

In the area: Hollie Mershon scored a career-high 23 points to help host Drexel close the regular season with a 65-51 win over Old Dominion. . . . Gwynedd-Mercy was knocked out of the ECAC South Region tournament with a 58-45 loss to visiting Alvernia.
