AMHERST, Mass. - The last time Phil Martelli's St. Joseph's Hawks won a road game, they hadn't even unwrapped their Christmas presents.

Wednesday night, DeAndre' Bembry gave the Hawks a career-high scoring performance and a big Atlantic Ten win over Massachusetts.

Bembry had a career-best 33 points to go with 14 rebounds and four assists as the Hawks (12-15, 6-9 A-10) ended a nine-game road losing streak, and a three-game skid overall, with an 82-71 win over UMass (16-12, 9-6).

"Every game, except for VCU at VCU and at Fordham, we led on the road," Martelli said. "In the second half, something happens.

"It's a whistle here, a dropped ball there, it's a missed layup there - and we've quit. Tonight, we didn't do that."

The Hawks extended their 36-35 halftime lead to 51-41 with 13:16 to go. Four minutes later, a pair of free throws by UMass' Donte Clark made it 56-55, and Martelli had to be thinking, "Here we go again."

Not this time, as Aaron Brown drove to the basket for a three-point play. Then UMass missed a three-pointer. Bembry rebounded and took it the distance for a layup that put the Hawks up 61-55.
