George Washington High's Shareef Miller, a hard-charging defensive end with a quick first step, committed Sunday to play at Penn State while on an official visit to State College.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior, a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, chose the Nittany Lions over runner-up Pittsburgh, Arizona State, Florida, Miami, Rutgers, and Temple, among others.

"He wanted to stay pretty close to home," said Ron Cohen, Washington's recently retired coach. "He likes it at Penn State. He's been up there a couple of times."

The Nittany Lions, who hosted a number of high school players on official visits this weekend, also received an oral commitment Sunday from 6-5, 260-pound defensive tackle Robert Windsor of Fond du Lac, Wis. He is the first defensive tackle to commit to the new class.

Penn State now is up to 22 commitments for its class of 2015. Three of those players already have signed their national letters of intent and enrolled in school earlier this month.

According to Cohen, Arizona State coach Todd Graham was scheduled to visit Miller on Monday. Miami coach Al Golden and several of his assistants were in town last week.

"I would like to thank every school that recruited me and gave me an opportunity to go to their school," Miller said Sunday on Twitter.

Miller, who transferred to Washington from Public League Class AAAA rival Frankford before this school year, earned Inquirer first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania honors in each of the last two seasons.

"He's a prototype 4-3 defensive end," Cohen said. "He can also play standing up as an outside linebacker. His best football is ahead of him."

Before he made his sudden commitment to the Nittany Lions, Miller had planned to make an official visit next weekend to either Florida or Miami.

Windsor, a three-star recruit according to Scout.com, selected Penn State over Wisconsin. He wrote on Twitter: "I didn't just commit to Penn State, I committed to being a wild dog."
