QB O’Brien spurns Penn State

Quarterback Danny O'Brien caused a stir at Penn State's opening of spring practice Monday when he was spotted on the field wearing a Nittany Lions jacket.

Quarterback Danny O'Brien caused a stir at Penn State's opening of spring practice Monday when he was spotted on the field wearing a Nittany Lions jacket.

But O'Brien, a transfer from Maryland, won't be wearing a Penn State uniform.

Via Twitter, O'Brien said, "I will always be a proud Terp alum, but am hungry to get after it and start my next chapter in Madison! Lots of hard work ahead. #JumpAround"

The news was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

O'Brien had visited Penn State earlier this month, then was in Wisconsin over the weekend before stopping again in State College.

O'Brien has already graduated from Maryland and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He does not have to sit out a year. He also visited Vanderbilt.

Penn State coach Bill O'Brien said Monday that he could not comment because of NCAA rules.

Wisconsin only has two healthy quarterbacks participating in spring practice, so the opportunity to play might have factored into his decision.

Penn State is hoping for better news Thursday when running back Ryan Switzer, considered the top high school junior football player in West Virginia, announces his decision.

Switzer (5-9, 180), who will likely be a slot receiver in college, has narrowed his coaches to Penn State, North Carolina and West Virginia. He visited the North Carolina campus last weekend and tweeted photos and messages about how much he liked Chapel Hill.

He has previously visited Penn State and was scheduled to visit again this week, according to reports.
