Downingtown West's Betley commits to play for Penn

Downingtown West guard Ryan Betley, who averaged 16.9 points per game and drilled 76 three-pointers last season, committed Tuesday to play at Penn.

Downingtown West guard Ryan Betley, who averaged 16.9 points per game and drilled 76 three-pointers last season, committed Tuesday to play at Penn.

The 6-foot-5, 185-pounder, a first-team all-Ches-Mont League National Division selection last season as a junior, chose the Quakers over Brown, Holy Cross, and Lafayette. Elon, Lehigh, Quinnipiac, and Yale also expressed interest.

Betley helped the Whippets go 24-6 overall, win the Ches-Mont League championship, and advance to the PIAA Class AAAA tournament last season.

"He's a three-point threat and efficient scorer," Downingtown West coach Jason Ritter said. "His willingness to put the team first played a big part in our success."

Betley is new Penn coach Steve Donahue's second commitment in the Class of 2016. A.J. Brodeur, a 6-8, 195-pound power forward from Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.), pledged to the Quakers last week.
