Massenat scores 1,000th point in Drexel win

Frantz Massenat scored 14 points, including the 1,000th point of his career, to lift Drexel to a 60-48 victory over James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association game Sunday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Bruiser Flint never knows what he's going to see when Drexel takes the court, but he liked what he saw a lot better Sunday night than in his team's previous game.

The Dragons got balanced scoring, led by 14 points from point guard Frantz Massenat, and bounced back from a disheartening loss to defeat James Madison, 60-48, Sunday in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Three nights earlier, the Dragons (10-14, 6-6 CAA) played poorly on defense and lost at home to Old Dominion, 78-66, only the Monarchs' third win in 23 games. Flint said he didn't do anything different between the two games.

"We've been up and down like this all year," the Drexel coach said. "Today we came out and did the things we needed to do - we played good D, we didn't turn it over really, we shot a decent percentage. When we do that, we've been able to win.

"It was just the same-old, same-old. It's too late for any changing up."

The Dragons played quite a bit with four guards for matchups against the Dukes (14-12, 8-5), who are coached by former St. Joseph's assistant Matt Brady.

The key guard for Drexel, as always, was Massenat, the 6-foot-4 junior whose free throw with 1 minute, 46 seconds to play gave him 1,000 points for his career. He finished the game with 1,001.

Massenat called the milestone "a good accomplishment" but admitted that it was difficult to get Thursday night's loss out of his head.

"I think it's still on our minds, to be honest," he said. "But we've got to keep going. You've got to keep playing. You've still got another play and a game after that, so you've got to keep moving."

The Dragons were strong on defense in the first half. Drexel led by 23-12 at the break.

"Most of the time, you don't see games decided in the first half, but this one probably was," Brady said.

The Dragons played without key reserve Kazembe Abif, who missed the game because of a death in his family.
