Bills select Penn State's Maybin

The Buffalo Bills selected Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin with the 11th pick in the NFL draft.

Maybin was the first Big Ten player selected and is the latest Penn State player to be selected in the first round. Six Nittany Lions have been taken in Round 1 over the last 7 years. Arizona selected Levi Brown with the fifth pick in 2007.

He is the 35th Penn State player to be selected in the first round, 32 of whom having played for Joe Paterno.

"All I can do and all I plan on doing is coming in and working as hard as possible," he told Buffalo reporters. "I'm a guy that likes to keep his mouth shut and let his game do the talking on the field. So I'm going to come in with a humble mindset, ready to work hard and ready to get a lot of work done."

A first-team All-American, the 6-4 Maybin was seventh in the nation with 12 solo sacks and was tied for ninth with 12 tackles for loss. Maybin also forced a team-high three fumbles, with two leading to touchdowns. He made 49 tackles (30 solo) and recorded three pass breakups during the 2008 season.

His weight likely will be an issue as he makes the transition to the NFL. He played at 234 but has bulked up to 250 since the season ended.

"I'm in a little bit of a different training mode right now than I was doing at Penn State and my body has responded well," Maybin said. "I've been able to carry the weight well and the coaches were happy with how I performed at the pro day.

"I definitely know that this is not the limit that my body can push itself to because I am so young. The opportunity is there for growth and for me to mature a little bit and I'm excited about the possibilities of that happening."

Penn State has a large group of draft-eligible players, with fellow defensive lineman Maurice Evans possibly the next to get picked.
