Temple defensive end Kamal Johnson held on kidnapping and assault charges

Temple football player Kamal Johnson allegedly held his girlfriend captive for three hours after dragging her down the stairs of her apartment building and punching her last month, according to police.

The 21-year-old woman told police that shortly before midnight on Sept. 27, Johnson came to her apartment on the 1600 block of North 15th Street after a phone argument. He allegedly accused her of cheating on him and demanded to see her cellphone. When she refused, he forced her into the hall and dragged her to his apartment in the same building, police said.

He allegedly punched her once in the back and threw her to the floor, where she hit her head. She told police that he forced her to sit in a chair in his bedroom for over three hours. She was eventually let go at 3:52 a.m., police said.

Johnson, 20, a junior defensive tackle, turned himself in to Philadelphia Police Central Detectives Thursday night. He remained in custody Saturday and was not at Temple's 37-28 win against South Florida at Lincoln Financial Field.

He was arraigned early Saturday on felony kidnapping and misdemeanor charges, including unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault. Bail was set at $25,000 and a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 23. The woman, a Temple student, reported the alleged assault to campus police on Thursday, and they turned the case over to Philadelphia authorities.

The woman said Johnson "had been abusive to her during their three-year relationship," police said.

The incident occurred in a building called the Edge where Temple rents several floors.

Johnson, 6-foot-4, 295 pounds, was a team captain at Willingboro, where he played defensive end and tight end.

He started Temple's first two games this season, against Villanova and Maryland, and saw action against Penn State Sept. 22.

Temple coach Steve Addazio refused to comment on Johnson's arrest or his status with the team.
