College Basketball: North Carolina defeats Wisconsin

Harrison Barnes scored 10 of his 20 points during the decisive second-half surge to help No. 5 North Carolina rally past No. 9 Wisconsin, 60-57, on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Tyler Zeller added 12 points for the Tar Heels (6-1), who had to show plenty of fight and toughness to outlast the Badgers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Coming off its first loss of the season, North Carolina trailed by five points midway through the second half before going on an 18-5 run that finally put the Tar Heels ahead for good.

Barnes was critical in that run, knocking down two three-pointers and a jumper. But on a night when their fast-paced attack rarely got out in transition, the Tar Heels only fought off Wisconsin (6-1) after stringing together enough defensive stops and getting enough defensive rebounds to aid their struggling offense.

For the Badgers, almost everything went to plan except for the outcome.

Kansas 77, Florida Atlantic 54 - Thomas Robinson had 19 points and 17 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double, and the No. 15 Jayhawks (4-2) overcame some sloppiness on offense to rout the Owls (4-4) in Lawrence, Kan.

Pittsburgh 80, Duquesne 69 - Ashton Gibbs scored 18 points, and the No. 17 Panthers (6-1) downed the crosstown rival Dukes (4-3) in the annual City Game.

Texas A&M 56, Alcorn St. 44 - Ray Turner scored 16 points, and the No. 25 Aggies (5-1) overcame a sleepy start and awful shooting to defeat the Braves (1-6) in College Station, Texas.

Princeton 69, Lafayette 54 - Ian Hummer scored 23 points to lead the host Tigers (3-5) over the Leopards (3-4).

Douglas Davis added 15 points and Denton Koon 13 for the Tigers, who scored 20 points off 15 turnovers.

Ryan Willen led Lafayette (3-4) with 16 points.

Penn State 62, Boston College 54 - Jermaine Marshall scored a career-best 22 points, and Tim Frazier had 20 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Nittany Lions (6-2) past the host Eagles (23-5) in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game.

In the area: University of the Sciences defeated Millersville, 87-71, behind 19 points each by Tyrone-Mann Barnes and Will Kernan. . . . Visiting Delaware got 20 points from Devon Saddler but fell to Boston University, 73-67. . . . The College of New Jersey defeated Rowan, 74-70, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference opener.
