Sports in Brief: Penn St. moves up in grid poll

Florida remained No. 1 after its second landslide victory, a 56-0 rout of Troy. Texas is still No. 2.

No. 3 Southern California received a first-place vote for the first time this season after Matt Barkley and the Trojans used a late-fourth quarter touchdown to rally past Ohio State, 18-15, in Columbus.

Michigan, unranked all last season while finishing 3-9, was No. 25 in the poll. After a 38-34 victory against Notre Dame on Saturday, the Wolverines moved into the rankings for the first time since the end of the 2007 season. The loss dropped the Fighting Irish out of the rankings.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince will be sidelined for three to four weeks after suffering a broken jaw late in the Bruins' 19-15 victory at Tennessee.

Auto racing: Rubens Barrichello picked up his second win in three races to lead Brawn GP to a 1-2 finish with Jenson Button at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

The British team is in the driver's seat for the Formula One title. The next stop is the Singapore GP on Sept. 27.

Denny Hamlin gained his first win Saturday at his home track at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, but the celebration after the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 was muted. Kyle Busch, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, fell eight points short of making the Chase for the Championship.

Mark Martin, 50, leads the 12-car Chase field as the top seed and is followed by Tony Stewart and three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson.

Brian Vickers knocked out Busch and Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth to take the final spot.

Patrick Long edged Parker Kligerman, his Cunningham Motorsports teammate, to win the South Jersey Building Trades 150 in the ARCA RE/MAX Series at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville.

Track and field: Usain Bolt cruised to another victory in the 200 meters at the World Athletics final in Thessaloniki, Greece, and American sprinter Carmelita Jeter became the third-fastest woman ever by clocking 10.67 seconds in the 100.

Jamaica's Bolt finished in 19.68 seconds in his last race of the season, ahead of Wallace Spearmon of the United States in 20.21.

Ice hockey: The Buffalo Sabres re-signed forward Drew Stafford, a 23-year-old restricted free agent, to a two-year deal worth $4 million.

Washington Capitals forward Tomas Fleischmann will miss the start of the regular season with a blood clot in his leg. He is expected to return to practice early next month.

Basketball: Defending champion Russia slipped past Greece, 68-65, as Kelly McCarty scored 17 points, at the European basketball championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland. France beat Croatia, 87-79.

The NBA trio of Tony Parker (24 points), Nicolas Batum (18) and Boris Diaw (15) led the way for France, which improved to 4-0.

Speedskating: Short-track skater J.R. Celski, 19, had surgery on his left leg after crashing Saturday during the 500-meter semifinals at the U.S. nationals in Marquette, Mich. He is expected to recover in time for the Vancouver Olympics.
