Dhafir Smith loses title fight

The Upper Darby boxer was decisioned by Tommy Karpency for a light heavyweight championship.

UPPER DARBY'S Dhafir Smith lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Tommy Karpency for the vacant NABA USA light heavyweight title on Saturday night in Washington, Pa. For the 31-year-old Smith (27-25-7, 4 knockouts), it was his third loss in his last four bouts. Karpency improved to 23-4-1 with 14 knockouts.

In other bouts involving local boxers:

* In New York, in the fight preceding Bryant Jennings' split-decision win over Mike Perez at Madison Square Garden, London's Ola Afolabi (21-3-4, 10 KOs) pummeled Kennett Square's Anthony Caputo Smith (15-4, 10 KOs) via third-round TKO, the fight halted on the advice of the ringside doctor. Smith, who took the fight just a few weeks ago after Afolabi's original opponent pulled out, was cut near his left eye in the second round en route to his fourth loss in six fights.

* On Friday in Chicago, Caleb Truax, the IBF's 11th-ranked middleweight, handed Germantown's Derek "Pooh" Ennis his third loss in five bouts via a unanimous, 10-round decision. Ennis' fell to 24-5-1 while Truax, of Osseo, Minn., improved to 24-1-2.
