Everything you need to know about Cal Poly SLO lefthander Matt Imhof

With the 47th overall pick, the Phillies took what some consider a late bloomer in left-handed pitcher Matt Imhof from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Imhof is coming off a season where he made 15 starts and compiled a record of 10-4. During his 99.1 innings on the mound, Imhof allowed only 27 earned runs, which put his ERA at 2.45. Opposing teams batted a mere .195 against him this past season.

In 2013, Imhof went 7-3 and earned 95 strikeouts to gain All-Big West honorable mention. Imhof's ERA was 2.74 during the campaign.

Sometimes amateur players are late bloomers, especially on the mound. Imhof wasn't draft out of high school but moved up draft boards as Cal Poly's Friday starter. Tall and lean on a 6-foot, 5-inch frame, Imhof has some room to fill out. And what he has is already pretty good. The left-hander pitches downhill with natural cutting movement on his fastball. His short, sharp slider is an out pitch at times. He has solid feel for a changeup, though it's still a work in progress. Imhof is generally around the plate with all of his pitches and has been one of the nation's top strikeout pitchers. There's still some upside to Imhof as he continues to fill out, giving him the chance to be in a big league rotation in the future.

Batters have trouble picking up pitches out of the 6-foot, 5-inch, 220 pounder's hand. Imhof's fastball life and his curveball are effective, if not outstanding. He displays some feel for a changeup with some fade, though he rarely uses it during games.
