Domowitch: He probably isn't going to slip past No. 2

There is no way to rationalize giving up what you would have to give up to move from 20 to 2, which is, well, pretty much everything. Your first-, second- and third-round picks this year and next year for starters. Maybe LeSean McCoy. Maybe more.

There are some people, very few of them who happen to be employed by NFL teams, who think Marcus Mariota might slide in the first round of the draft because, unlike Jameis Winston, he didn't play in a pro-style offense.

Certainly, anything is possible, but that fact had zero impact on Robert Griffin's draft position in 2012, and frankly, I don't expect it to have any impact on where Mariota will go. As I mentioned last week, unless they have some character or size questions, quarterbacks generally get pushed up in the draft, not down. I fully expect Mariota to be either the first or second player taken in the draft.

Which brings us to the all-in question. A trade-up from 20 to, say, 10, is one thing. It would be expensive, but if you truly were convinced that you were getting a franchise player, you could rationalize it.

But there is no way to rationalize giving up what you would have to give up to move from 20 to 2, which is, well, pretty much everything. Your first-, second- and third-round picks this year and next year for starters. Maybe LeSean McCoy. Maybe the owner's private plane and vacation home. And probably more.

I happen to think Mariota is going to be a very good NFL quarterback, and I think his chances for success certainly would increase if he were playing for his old college coach, Chip Kelly.

That said, Mariota isn't a can't-miss prospect. Despite the fact that they have had back-to-back 10-win seasons under Kelly, the Eagles still have work to do as far as upgrading their roster beyond quarterback. They are expected to address some of their needs in free agency. But they also need a solid draft, which means they can't pull a Mike Ditka and give them all away for one player, no matter how good they think he might be.

They have to improve their secondary. Outside linebacker Trent Cole is 32. Inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans will be 31 in July and is coming off his second Achilles' injury in 5years. Three of their starting offensive linemen are 32-plus. It's no sure thing Jeremy Maclin and/or LeSean McCoy will be with the team when training camp opens.

I'm OK with them going into the 2015 season with Nick Foles as their starter. I don't know if he can be the long-term answer at quarterback or not. I would expect them to select a quarterback at some point in this draft, but probably not in the first round, and certainly not with the idea of him starting as a rookie.

As for Mariota, maybe Chip can get him when he becomes a free agent after the 2018 season.
