City Six View Points

Recently, forward Lavoy Allen has been playing like the guy expected to be selected in the NBA draft. The Temple senior averaged 18 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.5 assists in last week’s games against Duke and George Washington.

NBA prospect

Recently, forward Lavoy Allen has been playing like the guy expected to be selected in the NBA draft. The Temple senior averaged 18 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.5 assists in last week's games against Duke and George Washington. The Pennsbury High School product shot 55.6 percent from the field — including 80 percent (4 of 5) from three-point territory. As a result, the four-year starter was named the Atlantic Ten and Big Five player of the week.

Owls drop out

Perhaps it doesn't pay to lose road games to the top-ranked team in the nation. Temple did that on Feb. 23 when it lost at then-No. 1 Duke. The expected setback eventually dropped the Owls out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Then-No. 24 Temple did respond by pounding George Washington, 57-61, on Saturday.

La Salle wakes up

For La Salle, it was a senior day to cherish. That's because the Explorers snapped their three-game losing streak by upsetting Massachusetts, 72-51, at the Tom Gola Arena on Sunday. La Salle held UMass to 29 percent from the field. Sophomore center Aaric Murray finished with a game-high 16 points for the Explorers. Teammate Jerrell Williams added 14 points and 13 rebounds. The much-needed victory improved La Salle to 13-16.

Still sliding

Following Monday's 93-72 setback at Notre Dame, the 19th-ranked Wildcats (21-8) have lost three straight and five of their last seven games. An inability to defend the three-pointer was one reason for Villanova's latest setback. Eighth-ranked Notre Dame (24-5) made 20 of 32 (62.5 percent) three-point attempts. Traveling to fourth-ranked Pittsburgh Saturday, Villanova is expected to continue its losing streak.

Twenty wins

Saturday's 66-63 win at Towson enabled Drexel to win at least 20 games in a season for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign (23-9). The Dragons are currently 20-9 heading into Friday's Colonial Athletic Association tournament first-round matchup against the Tigers (4-25). Drexel has won three straight and seven of the last nine games.
