Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was joined by just-retired White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko yesterday as the first co-winners of baseball's Roberto Clemente Award.

The award, based on a vote of media and fans, is given annually to the player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team."

It is named for the late Pirates slugger who was known for his humanitarian efforts before dying in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Rollins joins Greg Luzinski and Garry Maddox as Phillies who have won the prize.

"You understand the prestige that comes with the award, and not for any other reason but to say, wow, I did something important in the game that had nothing to do with baseball, but everything to do with helping others," Rollins said.

Konerko is the first White Sox player to win.
