Buckle and Snedeker share the lead

The rookies are 2 shots ahead of Tiger Woods going into the final round in California.

SAN DIEGO - Another new name reached the top of the leader board yesterday in the Buick Invitational.

Australian Andrew Buckle closed out his 4-under-par 68 at Torrey Pines with a 15-foot birdie putt that gave him a share of the lead with fellow rookie Brandt Snedeker.

But just 2 shots behind, at 207, and casting an enormous presence on the leader board was Tiger Woods. He played bogey-free on the South Course for a 69 that left him in prime position to capture his seventh consecutive PGA Tour victory.

Buckle and Snedeker, who shot 74, have made a combined 20 starts on the PGA Tour. They will play in the final group with Kevin Sutherland, whose only victory came five years ago.

Champions Tour

KAHUKU, Hawaii - Fred Funk had another spectacular day on the greens, shooting an 8-under 64 to take a 3-stroke lead in the Turtle Bay Championship.

The 50-year-old Funk had his second consecutive bogey-free round to break the tournament record with a 15-under 129 total on the oceanside Palmer Course.

Japan's Kiyoshi Murota, playing on a sponsor's exemption, shot a 65 to go 12 under. Tom Kite (66), coming off a second-place tie in the MasterCard Championship, was another stroke behind in the Champions Tour's first full-field event of the year.

Funk had eight birdies and, using a wider stance he picked up during the pro-am, putted just 24 times. He is seeking his second Champions Tour victory in five starts.

European Tour

DOHA, Qatar - Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa made three late birdies to share the third-round lead in the Qatar Masters with Australians Richard Green and Nick O'Hern.

Goosen bogeyed three holes after the eighth but then had birdies at Nos. 15 to 17 to shoot a 1-under 71 for a 12-under 204. Green also shot 71 and O'Hern had a 69 on the Doha Golf Club course.

The event is part of the European Tour's Desert Swing.
