In 2017, a “Year in Review” cartoon collection should really be called “Trump in Review.”Our president so dominated the news (real and fake) that there was little white space left for other issues. However, I have the good fortune of living in Pennsylvania, where our GOP state legislature continually finds ways to embarrass itself.
And, did I mention that I cartoon in Philadelphia, where a year doesn’t go by without some (usually) Democratic elected official ending up in an orange jumpsuit?
Most of my reader reaction comes on national issues (read: Trump), but I am one of many cartoonists drawing that man’s distinctive hair, tie, and hands. The sad fact is that our state legislature is largely ignored by readers and voters who may complain occasionally about its actions but who don’t seem to have the energy to elect a competent delegation to make any changes. I hope my cartoons (often inspired by a John Baer column) help hold the Harrisburg unworthies in the light.
While Harrisburg passes a budget by charging its spending to future generations (way to go, fiscal conservatives!), it looks as if Philadelphia will balance its budget, bursting with increased labor costs and the bill for taking on the School District, by raising our taxes what could be an eye-popping number (way to go, unopposed Democrats). The number of murdered citizens is also eye-popping. I hope the budget includes real money to bring those deaths down and not just money thrown at another batch of “antiviolence” programs that, as Helen Ubiñas has pointed out, aren’t reducing the gun bangs for all our bucks. I predict good cartooning ahead.
I wish everyone a peaceful 2018, even though, clearly, that would be bad for cartooning.
