A sorry celebration

"Joe Pa party insensitive" (Sept. 23) is the ultimate understatement. I have a son at Penn State and a daughter at Temple and attended the Sept. 17 game with them. I thought I was in the twilight zone, completely incredulous that thousands of people could stand and cheer for former football coach Joe Paterno, who did nothing to prevent his colleague, Jerry Sandusky, from sexually abusing dozens of children over the course of several decades. It was beyond disturbing.

My only solace was that a majority of those fans were older people stuck in a warped and distorted past. My son and his friends were equally disturbed and could not understand why Penn State would choose to put their school back in such a negative spotlight. I'm so proud he does not drink the large glass of Kool-Aid the administration is misguidedly pouring for the students.

Temple is a school on the rise. Sadly, Penn State will remain the butt of a national joke while it continues to celebrate its sordid past.
