Letters: Praise for worker who replaced tattered flags

AS A RETIRED Navy officer, I would like to thank Stu Bykofsky for his article on Navy veteran Tony Clark and his sense of honor and duty. Something many civilians misunderstand is that our veterans, as proved by Mr. Clark, don't stop serving just because they retire or their enlistment ends. We take the values honed by our military service back into our communities in an effort to make them better. In Mr. Clark's case he saw flags, obviously long neglected by the city, and replaced them at his own expense and on on his own time. Instead of hailing this man for his civic leadership, our city leaders may yet punish him. I couldn't be more embarassed for my city.

It is my hope Mayor Kenney, as the chief executive of this city, makes this foolishness go away and realizes Philadelphia is fortunate to have dedicated employees like Tony Clark. I would also ask the mayor to conduct training for all of his department leaders on proper flag etiquette. It is long overdue.

Thank you for this article and enlightening us on the continuous stupidity in Philly government. I hope when the person is exposed who started this, he/she is hoisted up one of those flagpoles by his/her belt buckle.

Reining in Council

I was thrilled to see the courts decided in favor of developer Ori Feibush in his bid to acquire land in Point Breeze. This ruling seems to limit Council's power in land sales. For years, they have hidden behind the "councilmanic prerogative" sham. What does that mean, anyway; where is it written? I think it just means "I have to get mine before you get yours."

It's time that Council is brought to task for its "royal" rulings.

Enough is enough.

Way too premature

Donald Trump has appointed Chris Christie to be the head of his transitional team. The 2016 Republican National Convention will convene in Cleveland from July 18-21. In the world of polictics, as I have become to understand it over the years, at this time in the race, the front-runner should be in search of a No. 2 person to be his or her vice presidential running mate.
