Glenn Horowitz, general surgeon

Glenn D. Horowitz, 63, of Huntingdon Valley, a general surgeon in Northeast Philadelphia and Elkins Park, died Thursday, Aug. 11, of Lewy body dementia at Abramson Center for Jewish Life, North Wales.

Dr. Horowitz was a surgeon at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital for 20 years. He also maintained a private practice at Surgical Services L.L.P., 9892 Bustleton Ave., Bustleton.

In 1988, he was appointed to the medical staff in the department of surgery at Rolling Hill Hospital in Elkins Park. His specialties were oncologic, colorectal, and thoracic surgery.

"He was one of the first to do laparoscopy in the Philadelphia area," said his wife, Anne B. Horowitz.

Born and reared in Reading, he graduated from Mount Penn High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Horowitz completed a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and served a residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. He served a general surgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was a fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a donor to the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Married for 34 years, he and his wife had two daughters, Samantha and Abigail. Before moving to Huntingdon Valley in 1996, the family lived in Elkins Park.

"He was a very gentle person with a beautiful smile that lit up the room," said his wife.

He also was an avid Phillies fan, she said.

Besides his wife and daughters, he is survived by a brother.

Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 14. Burial was in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd.
