Charles Gould Ward Jr., 89, of Richmond, Va., a former executive with Scott Paper Co. in Philadelphia, died Sunday, June 21, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center of injuries after a fall during a game of golf.

Mr. Ward was born in 1925 in Hingham, Mass. He attended Hingham High School and graduated in 1943. He then enlisted in the military, where he served as a tail gunner in China during World War II.

He served until 1945 and enrolled at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1948.

In 1949, Mr. Ward married Jane Downing, his high school sweetheart.

Mr. Ward then entered the business world and joined Scott in Connecticut. He worked in Maine and Detroit with the company before moving to the headquarters in Philadelphia in 1961. He worked in sales and became the division vice president of consumer products marketing in 1976.

"He was a very honest and forthright person, and a very hard worker and dedicated to family," said son David D. Ward.

While living in Wallingford, Mr. Ward and his wife were active in the community. His wife was president of the Providence Garden Club and chaired the Philadelphia Flower Show.

"He helped her with her gardening interests, and she supported him in his career with Scott Paper. They were a loving and dynamic couple," David Ward said.

Mr. Ward retired in 1986 and moved to Vero Beach, Fla., with his wife.

He was a dedicated gardener and a passionate golfer who could shoot his age.

He and his wife were members of the Garden Club of America, and his wife served as president in 1990.

The couple moved to Richmond in 2008. She died in 2012.

"I think most people who knew my father were very conscious of his character but also very conscious of his joy of life," David Ward said. "He will be sorely missed by family and friends."

In addition to his son, Mr. Ward is survived by sons Charles Gould Ward III and Matthew L. Ward, and 10 grandchildren.

A life celebration will be held later at his summer home on Cape Cod.
