Life celebration services are to be held Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, for Anne Wood, 88, of Medford, who died of a heart attack last Nov. 24 soon after arriving in Portland, Maine, to visit family.

Miss Wood, a longtime teacher and administrator at Westtown School in Chester County, was stricken as she collected her luggage at the Portland International Jetport. News of her death was withheld due to family issues and so that memorial services could be planned in Pennsylvania, where she worked, and New Jersey, where she lived for many years.

Born in Moorestown, she graduated from Moorestown Friends School. Miss Wood received a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1948 and a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1953, but she was a lifelong learner, her family said.

She was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Naples in 1959 and 1960 and studied at Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind., the Quaker retreat at Pendle Hill in Wallingford, and at the American Academy of Rome.

Her 41-year career was spent at Westtown School in Westtown, where she was dean of girls for 21 years, and principal of the Upper School for 15 years. She served as college counseling director, Latin and Quakerism teacher, and housemother, and also took part in faculty theater productions.

"It is hard for most people to think of Anne without also thinking of Westtown," her family said in a statement.

When not working, she led a life informed by art and nature. She gardened, listened to music, and enjoyed poetry, pottery and painting.

"She saw beauty everywhere and shared her vision through painting, primarily in watercolor," her family said.

After retiring to Medford Leas in 1989, she made the art studio her second home.

For many years, Miss Wood drove two hours on Sunday to participate in Quaker meeting for worship at the Westtown Monthly Meeting, where she was a member and elder.

"Her spiritual wisdom, plain speaking, and generous kindness touched lives with the steadiness of a love born of her Quaker roots," her family said. She was active in numerous Quaker activities in Westtown, Philadelphia and with the Friends World Committee for Consultation.

She is survived by nine nieces and nephews. A brother and sister died earlier.

Life celebration services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Westtown School, 975 Westtown Rd., West Chester, Pa. 19382, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 19 in the Holly Room at Medford Leas, 1 Medford Leas Way, Medford, N.J 08055. Burial was private.
