Michael S. Heaney, 26, a 2005 graduate of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken who was captain of the swim team there, died Saturday, Nov. 9, at Cooper River West medical center in Pennsauken of complications from an April 11, 2012, cycling accident in Morris Township, N.J.

Mr. Heaney, a product manager for Verizon Wireless in Basking Ridge, was hit by a car as he trained on his bicycle for a triathlon, his mother, Sheila, said in an interview.

A news report at the time stated that he had suffered head injuries and broken bones in his left leg.

Mr. Heaney grew up in Voorhees and began his swimming career at Downs Farm Swim Club in Cherry Hill and the Camden County YMCA.

"He began his swimming at 5 years of age," his mother said.

Mr. Heaney earned a bachelor's degree in finance and marketing at the College of New Jersey in 2009, where he was one of three captains of the swim and diving team.

A certified skydiver, he was training to be a volunteer fireman, his mother said.

Verizon coworkers organized a blood drive for him with New Jersey Blood Services, which on June 5, 2012, collected 117 pints from the firm's employees.

The College of New Jersey swimming community organized a one-mile open water swimming event in 2012 and again in 2013 in Belmar to raise funds for his medical treatments.

"There were almost 500 swimmers last year; this year, close to 650," his mother said. And this year, "there were roughly 1,000 people on the beach."

Mr. Heaney was a volunteer at Special Olympics events in Verona and the College of New Jersey, she said.

"He would have given the shirt off his back" to those in need, she said. "He could light up a room."

Besides his mother, Mr. Heaney is survived by a grandmother, Kathryn Meinken, two brothers, and an uncle. He was predeceased by his father, Donald.

A viewing was set from 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Healey Funeral Home, 1816 Berlin Rd., Cherry Hill, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there.

Donations may be made to the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, Second Floor, 825 Georges Rd., North Brunswick, N.J. 08902.
