Trumpeter Stu Satalof, 58

Stu Satalof, 58, a Philadelphia-born trumpet player who had his first gig at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill and was a favorite of Broadway's Stephen Sondheim, died Tuesday, June 26, in his New Milford, N.J., home of an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Satalof performed with entertainers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Ann-Margret, and appeared on television recordings and motion picture sound tracks, including for the Rocky films. He had been performing with the Broadway revival of Anything Goes.

Mr. Satalof was Sondheim's first-choice trumpeter for a show debut, said his brother Mitchell. He met his wife, Sally, a viola player, when both performed in Sondheim's Passion. They married in 1995.

Mr. Satalof first picked up a trumpet for a school music program at age 9. He graduated from Overbrook High School in 1971 and briefly studied music at Temple University, where he played in the marching band. He left Temple in 1974 to work in Las Vegas.

In addition to his wife and brother, Mr. Satalof is survived by his mother, Lois; daughter, Sydney; and two other brothers.

A memorial service was held Sunday, July 1, at the Boulevard Funeral Home in New Milford.
