Edna H. Jones, 73, a managing editor at the Chilton publishing firm in Radnor from 1987 to 1997, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, of lung cancer at Bishop White Lodge of Cathedral Village, the retirement community in Upper Roxborough.

She had lived in Flourtown from 1991 before moving to Andorra in 2011.

Born in Hazleton, Pa., Miss Jones graduated from Hazleton Senior High School in 1956 and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature at Dickinson College in 1960.

After working as an assistant editor at the Ware Bros. publishing firm in Philadelphia from 1960 to 1961, Miss Jones began her career at Chilton's magazine divisions and book division as an editorial assistant from 1961 to 1963, and as an associate editor from 1963 to 1965.

Her management positions included associate managing editor from 1965 to 1969, manager of editorial production from 1969 to 1973, production manager from 1973 to 1976, and manager of editing and design from 1976 to 1987.

As managing editor, Miss Jones was responsible for publishing 50 to 55 books a year while overseeing a $3 million annual budget.

In retirement in the 1990s, Miss Jones was a tutor in the adult literacy program at the Ambler Area YMCA and a children's reading tutor in the Jenkintown office of A+ Test Prep & Tutoring.

She was a board member of the Springfield Township Historical Society in Montgomery County and a captain of the Flourtown Town Watch.

A member of the Unitarian Society of Germantown since 2003, she was a member of its board of trustees, chair of its administrative committee, and editor of its monthly newsletter, for which she earned its congregational award in 2008.

Peter Walsh, a colleague at the Unitarian Society, said in a phone interview that Miss Jones was survived by a nephew in the Hazleton area.

A memorial service was set for 6 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Unitarian Society of Germantown, Lincoln Drive near Wayne Avenue, followed by a supper there.
