Jeffrey McKinney, 33, of Media, an orthopedic technician, firefighter, and EMT, died of a stroke July 8 at home.

For more than three years, Mr. McKinney had been an orthopedic technician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Previously, he had been an emergency medical technician with American Medical Response in Philadelphia.

Mr. McKinney had been active with medical emergency services and firefighting since he was a teenager, said his sister Kerri Murphy. Since moving to the Philadelphia area from California in 2002, he had been a member of the Folcroft and Swarthmore Fire Companies.

Mr. McKinney was raised by his mother and stepfather, Pamela and John Irick, in Yuba City, Calif. He earned an associate degree in fire science and firefighting from Shasta College in Redding, Calif.

A baseball enthusiast, he was on a mission to visit every professional-baseball stadium in the United States and recently visited the new Yankees stadium in New York, his sister said. Though he rooted for the Phillies, his favorite team was the San Francisco Giants. He was a practical joker who would quote lines from movies and was a big fan of actor Will Ferrell, Murphy said.

Last month he became engaged to marry Katie Zolinas.

In addition to his sister, mother, and stepfather, Mr. McKinney is survived by a sister, Denise Williams; a brother, Jason Irick; and his grandmother Marie Sprague.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m.
