S. Matthew Devine | Bail interviewer, 86

S. Matthew Devine, 86, a bail interviewer for Delaware County from 1977 to last year, died of prostate cancer Wednesday at Kennedy Memorial Hospitals-University Medical Center/Stratford. Since April, he and his wife, Bernice, had lived in West Deptford.

S. Matthew Devine, 86, a bail interviewer for Delaware County from 1977 to last year, died of prostate cancer Wednesday at Kennedy Memorial Hospitals-University Medical Center/Stratford. Since April, he and his wife, Bernice, had lived in West Deptford.

From 1957 until he went to work for Delaware County, Mr. Devine owned Devine's Children's Store in the Manoa Shopping Center in Havertown, said his daughter, Susan Woods. In the early 1950s, he sold insurance in North Jersey.

A 1941 graduate of Clifton Heights High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Upsala College in East Orange, N.J., in 1950.

During World War II, he was an Army radar operator who served in Germany. He was decorated "for protecting valuable kitchen equipment during an air raid," his daughter said with a laugh.

Besides his wife of 62 years and his daughter, Mr. Devine is survived by sons Mark, Paul and Christopher; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd., Broomall. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Rd., Broomall. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
