Nathaniel M. Kirkland | College sophomore, 20

Nathaniel M. Kirkland, 20, of East Mount Airy, a sophomore at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., died Jan. 10 from apparent drowning in Guatemala, where he had been helping to repair hurricane-ravaged adobe classrooms.

The funeral of Nathaniel M. Kirkland, 20, of East Mount Airy, was held Friday at Arch Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Mr. Kirkland, a sophomore at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., died Jan. 10 from apparent drowning in Guatemala, where he had been helping to repair hurricane-ravaged adobe classrooms. He was on winter break, participating in a Serve the World project sponsored by the United Methodist Church and organized by his college.

At Dickinson, Mr. Kirkland, an English major, was a member of several service organizations, a founder of the Multimedia Club, and a resident adviser. Last summer, he completed an externship with the law firm of Reed Smith in Philadelphia.

Mr. Kirkland was a graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia, where he was president of the audio-visual club and a producer for the school's television station, CBN.

He was passionate in all endeavors and had completed many poems, screenplays, short films and documentaries, said his half-brother Brandon Bruce.

Mr. Kirkland is also survived by his father, Nathan Kirkland; grandmother Catherine Newton; sister Natalye Kirkland; half-sister Shawana Adams; and half-brothers James Adams, Kearston Adams and Terrell Bruce. His mother, Anita Momie, died in 1997.
