Robert D. Schmitt | Engineer, 83

Robert Diehl Schmitt, 83, formerly of Ambler, a retired engineer, died of a stroke March 4 at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, N.H.

For seven years, until retiring in 1988, Mr. Schmitt was a part owner and vice president of Fluitron Inc., a manufacturer of equipment for chemical, pharmaceutical, and specialty gas companies in Ivyland.

Previously, he had been an engineer with several area companies.

Mr. Schmitt graduated from Germantown High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master's degree in engineering from Harvard University.

His first wife, Janet L. Schmitt, died in 1981. Since 1982, he had been married to Evelyn R. Schmitt. In 1994 they moved to a retirement community in New Hampshire.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schmitt is survived by sons Stephen, Christopher, and Peter; stepchildren Sharon Kissel and William and Thomas Murphy; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of the Messiah, Route 202 and Sumneytown Pike, Gwynedd. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
