Weather Service: What Philly area can expect from Irma as of now

The National Weather Service says that the impacts of Irma on the Philadelphia region will be limited based on current tracking models for the Category 4 hurricane.

The main effects will be felt at the Shore, where a "prolonged period of an elevated risk of risk of rip currents will continue into next week," the NWS office in Mount Holly said. A small craft advisory also is in effect.

In a statement, the NWS said both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Jose, a Category 3 storm that is trailing the more powerful cyclone, will be producing higher swells in our waters through next week.

The area can expect rain next week, likely Wednesday, the weather service said. Widespread flooding is not likely, but that is not certain as of now.

The chance of damaging winds in the region is "very unlikely," according to the statement.
