A dry celebration? Rain on Super Bowl Sunday expected to end by end of game

By the time the Eagles or the New England Patriots get to hoist the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night, chances are good that the rain will have ended. But, if you plan to be outside to express your postgame sentiments, pack a hat, gloves, and scarf — it's going to be on the raw side, with wind-chills dropping.

Rain, expected to start by midmorning Sunday, is likely to taper off as the game clock at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis fades to zero — expected to happen around 10:15 p.m. Lincoln Financial Field time, barring any overtime — said National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Shafer in Mount Holly.

"We can't rule it out entirely that there's some rain to start out with, but the trend will be drying," Shafer said Saturday.

The biggest weather issue facing postgame revelers — or mourners, depending on the final score — is expected to be the chill. Temperatures are forecast to drop from 44, to 38, between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., and west winds dropping chills from 40 to 31 in the same period.

"Given that it will have just rained, it's definitely not the most ideal condition to be outside," Shafer said.

Think it's cold here? Be glad you're not in Minneapolis. Sunday's high will only reach 5 degrees before a low of minus-2 settles in at night, according to the National Weather Service.

What Philadelphia's Sunday night forecast means for police, who have had to historically face fan rowdiness after big sporting events, only time will tell. The region hasn't celebrated a major-sports championship during the winter since 1960.

In any event, police would like everyone to chill out.
