Shapiro outlines Montco initiatives for 2015

NORRISTOWN In his "State of the County" address Thursday, Board of Commissioners Chairman Josh Shapiro gave a preview of some of the initiatives underway for 2015.

Among them:

  1. Three county bridges are slated for reconstruction, 14 for repair, and seven are in design.

  2. $4.6 million in improvements to county trails and parks, including starting the Sunrise Trail in the Limerick area, completing the Pennypack Trail Extension in Lower Moreland, and a pilot bike-share project on the Schuylkill River Trail in Pottstown.

  3. New Community Connections offices in Lower Merion, Upper Perkiomen Valley, Ambler, and Souderton, and a state/county pilot program for human services in Lansdale.

  4. 911 text-message capability to launch in the spring.

  5. Continued repairs to county buildings, and security improvements at the county courthouse.

  6. An "integrated wellness program" of the Health, Recreation, and Planning Departments.

Shapiro also said the county was on track to meet his goal of cutting energy consumption by 50 percent by 2018.

Commissioner Bruce Castor said the countywide emergency radio system was proceeding as scheduled and should go live in 2016.
