A longtime manager with the Camden County Improvement Authority was indicted Thursday on charges of assault by automobile for allegedly hitting a car in Lindenwold with his county-owned vehicle, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Michael Hagarty, 56, also faces charges of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving, and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test, according to municipal court records. At least one person in the other car was injured, authorities said.

Hagarty, of Pine Hill, did not return a call for comment. He is director of project management for the CCIA and has worked for Camden County for about 10 years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He has been suspended without pay since shortly after the April 29 accident, after he was charged by the Lindenwold police, Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen said Thursday.

"His status will remain that way until the adjudication of his criminal proceeding," Keashen said. "Once the proceedings are finalized the agency will take further actions."

Hagarty was not on duty at the time of the accident, authorities said. He was driving a car registered to the CCIA, Keashen said.

Hagarty had been under investigation since the night of April 29, when he struck the other car about 8:30 p.m. on East Gibbsboro Road, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. The other car had five occupants, ranging in age from 19 to 21, according to Andy McNeil, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
