HARRISBURG - Investigators on Friday served search warrants at two of Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane's offices, according to sources with knowledge of the search.

The purpose of the searches was unclear, but they appeared to be the first sign that Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman was moving forward with her investigation into Kane, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

One source said the investigators were seeking e-mails from the offices. The warrants were served on Kane's Harrisburg and Norristown-area offices.

A grand jury has recommended that Kane be charged with perjury, obstruction, and other offenses for leaking confidential information about a 2009 investigation to the Philadelphia Daily News. Whether and when to prosecute is a decision that now falls to Ferman.

Kane has maintained she did nothing wrong and is a victim of angry Republicans upset at her political ascent as the first woman and Democrat to hold the office.

Her office did not respond to requests for comment late Friday. Ferman declined to comment.

There was no visible sign of activity at the Montgomery County office, along Trooper Road in Audubon, late Friday afternoon. One lawyer leaving for the day said he could neither confirm nor deny that a search warrant had been served but said he had not witnessed a search firsthand.

He declined to give his name but added: "Stuff happens here all the time."
