Former Gov. Edward G. Rendell endorsed Cindy Bass Saturday in the contentious Eighth Council District primary.

"I'm confident that Cindy is just the kind of public servant who will bring the needed integrity, competence, and heart" to the job, Rendell said in a statement.

Bass, an aide to U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah (D., Phila.), is one of seven candidates for the Democratic nomination in the Eighth, in Northwest Philadelphia.

The others are Andrew Lofton, Robin Tasco, Howard Treatman, Verna Tyner, Greg Paulmier and William Durham.

On Friday, the city Board of Ethics launched an investigation into whether a letter supporting Tyner from departing Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller was written improperly on city letterhead and distributed through a city e-mail account. - Inquirer staff
